The Pay It Forward Initiative began in September 2010 when Charlie Cavell, a student at the Wayne State University School of Social Work, became frustrated by the backlogging of city services meant to assist out-of-work Detroiters find employment.
By November 2010, just two months after Cavell began work on the project, he had formed a board of directors and incorporated as an IRS-certified 501(c) (3) nonprofit agency.
As of May 2011, the Pay It Forward Initiative has had eleven interns come through its doors, three of whom have since gained employment as a direct result of the program.
In June 2011, the Pay It Forward Initiative was awarded a grant by City Connect Detroit that will fund 25 new interns through the Grow Detroit Young Talent Program.
